ATV-related Injuries and Deaths

With summertime here, more and more people will be enjoying the outdoors.  A lot of people, including children, take their ATV’s out for fun.  There are some things to know about ATV safety before going out, though.

A preliminary review of news reports shows at least 13 deaths from 4/26/2011 to 5/9/2011.  Of these, 2 were youths under 16. *

In 2009, the CPSC reports that 61 youths under 16 and 29 youths under the age of 12 died in ATV accidents.

In the most recent report on ATV-related injuries and deaths by the Consumer Products Safety Commission, there were 376 deaths reported in 2009, with data still being collected.

Many of the accidents are due to inexperienced or unsupervised riders.  However, there have been a number of ATV recalls in the past, with problems of rollovers and brake problems.  Always check out your equipment before using it, and supervise underage children at all times.
